Making Connections with the Writer

Students of grade 3 are exploring “How we express ourselves” theme in which they are inquiring about ‘Stories and Poems’. During the course of the unit students came up with interesting questions like “How do authors get ideas to write?” “What are the skills to be developed to become an author?” and so on. Many of their questions were revolving around the author. So we planned for a  “Interact with the author” session on 3rd and 4th September, 2020 for our students.

Ms.Sowmya Rajendran, a famous Children’s book author visited and had an engaging conversation with our students.Students thoroughly enjoyed her story “The pleasant Rakshasa” and drew cues about how authors arrive at characters for their story. They also sought answers for interesting questions like “How to write a story to get readers hooked into the book?”. It was a very insightful fun filled session.

Students reflected about the session as “ It was an interesting session. I observed that she used the ‘Reader’s Theatre’ skills to read the story and it was good to hear her share about how she got inspired. We also understood that stories must connect with the emotions of the people to make the work interesting”.

The author shared her experience with us  as “ It was a pleasure doing the sessions with Akshar Arbol. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and involvement of the students. I thoroughly enjoyed watching their expressions as I was doing the storytelling and answering their questions.

I also treasure the little personal stories that some of them shared, ranging from not brushing their teeth that morning to how someone’s mother laughs!

It’s great that many of them are already readers. I’m sure that with the school organising such interactions, their interest in reading and writing will continue.”
